Privacy Policy
Effective October 10, 2026 · Android, macOS and Web
ScopeCast Nightsky provides astronomy forecasts, telescope-viewing conditions and optional viewing reminders. This policy explains information that may be processed when you use ScopeCast on Android, macOS or the web.
1. Information ScopeCast processes
To show observing conditions and forecasts, ScopeCast processes a location you select or search for. If you choose the current-location feature and grant permission, it obtains your device's latitude and longitude. ScopeCast saves the selected location, including its coordinates, in local browser or WebView storage so you can use it again. Your device or browser may also store other application preferences.
2. How location and search data are used
ScopeCast sends the latitude and longitude of your selected location to Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) to retrieve weather forecasts and observing conditions. When you search for a place by name, ScopeCast sends the search text to Open-Meteo's geocoding service to find matching locations. You can search for a place manually rather than granting GPS access. You may revoke location permission in your device or browser settings.
3. Data shared with third parties
Weather and geocoding provider: Open-Meteo receives the coordinates used in forecast requests and the place names entered in geocoding searches. As with ordinary internet requests, the provider may also receive network information such as your IP address. These transfers are made to provide the forecasts or search results you request.
Push-notification delivery providers: If you enable and register for supported web push reminders, the notification service may use delivery infrastructure operated by Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging), Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft, depending on your device and browser. A push subscription includes a delivery endpoint and associated technical subscription information. Those providers process information necessary to deliver notifications under their own policies. This does not mean every provider receives information from every user.
Hosting and network infrastructure: When you visit the ScopeCast website or use online services, the relevant web server and network providers may process connection details such as IP address, request time and requested resource. We do not claim that every such detail is permanently stored.
These disclosures describe service-related data transfers. We have not identified any advertising-data sharing or sale of personal information in the reviewed code.
4. Optional reminders and notifications
ScopeCast offers optional observing reminders. Depending on the platform and whether you enable the feature, a reminder may use a push subscription and a service that schedules and sends notification messages. Subscription and scheduling information may be processed to provide those reminders. You can turn off notification permission in your browser or device settings. Contact us to request removal of server-side notification subscription information, if any is retained.
5. Local storage and retention
ScopeCast stores the selected location in local browser or WebView storage. Removing the app's stored data, clearing the site's browser data, or uninstalling the app may remove locally stored information, depending on the platform. Any server-side reminder records, website logs and third-party records may have separate retention practices; their exact retention periods have not been established here. You may contact us about records under our control.
6. Your choices and data deletion
You may choose a location manually instead of using GPS, revoke location permission, disable notifications, and clear locally stored app or website data. To ask about access to or deletion of any personal information or push subscriptions held by the ScopeCast operator, email garrettskro@gmail.com. We will review requests in accordance with applicable law and the records actually held.
7. Security
ScopeCast uses HTTPS endpoints for the identified Open-Meteo requests. No internet transmission or storage method can be guaranteed completely secure. External services have their own security and privacy practices.
8. Children's privacy
ScopeCast is an astronomy and observing-planner application. It is not designed to solicit personal information from children. If you believe a child's personal information has been collected improperly, contact us using the address below.
9. Platform coverage
This policy covers ScopeCast Nightsky on Android, macOS and the web. Features and permissions can vary by platform: GPS requires device or browser permission, and push notifications may not be available or enabled everywhere.
10. Policy changes
We may update this policy if ScopeCast's features, service providers or data practices change. The updated version will be posted at this address with a revised effective date.
